The Horn of Africa Voluntary Youth Committee (HAVOYOCO) was founded as a Non-Governmental Organization in 1992 by the youth in Hargeisa. HAVOYOCO is a local NGO registered with The Attorney General's office and the Ministry of national Planning and development the in the Republic of Somaliland and with relevant institutions in other countries where it operates. It is self-motivated and has a long experience of implementing donor funded projects. The organization has a structure composed of the General Assembly, Board of Directors and the Executive Director who is in charged with the day-to-day running of activities. After a long and bitter civil war that left most of the country in ruins the people of Somaliland declared an independent Somaliland. A new government was established, but it was not able to meet any of the basic needs of its people because of the massive destruction of virtually all infrastructures including schools, bridges, roads, health services, businesses, and power systems. Since then, security has improved, the government has started several initiatives, but still many sectors needed help from the international community. The war also left an increase in homeless children, destitute orphans, and many households headed by females. HAVOYOCO was created by the youth of Hargeisa to help the vulnerable people, based on the philosophy that it is the community itself who can best create sustainable solutions to their problems. HAVOYOCO is now operational throughout Somaliland and Ethiopia (Somali Regional state of Ethiopia) and Kenya. HAVOYOCO has it’s headquarter in Hargeisa with two sub offices in Burao and Borama. It also has its Ethiopia offices in Addis-Ababa and Jijiga. HAVOYOCO is currently registered in the UK as a company, limited by guarantee and has a liaison office in Nairobi (Kenya) which is mainly engaged in donor relations and fundraising purposes. |
